Flooding in Vietnam

Heavy rains over recent days have caused record-breaking floods across parts of central Vietnam. Vietnam is prone to often deadly storms and flooding that cause widespread property damage, especially during its storm season from June until October. Much of Hoi An has become inundated by floodwater, with several houses submerged up to their roofs, as authorities deployed boats to evacuate tourists.

“This was the biggest flood I have experienced, with water levels in my house about 40 centimetres higher than that of 1999,” said a 56-year-old Hue resident

Throughout central Vietnam, authorities have evacuated tens of thousands of people from flooded areas, where transportation and power have been cut off. The government said in a report that more than 306,000 households and businesses were suffering from blackouts. 

The heavy rain also triggered a massive landslide of red mud early on Tuesday morning about 3km (1.9 miles) long in coastal Quang Ngai province, leaving about 1,700 people isolated and damaging crops, authorities said.

Scientists say human-driven climate change is making extreme weather events like storms and floods more deadly and destructive. This month’s rainfall comes after Typoon Bualoi in September, leaving at least 13 people dead and 20 others missing.

According to the General Statistics Office, natural disasters – mostly storms, floods and landslides – left 187 people dead or missing in the country in the first nine months of 2025. More than 240,000 hectares (590,000 acres) of crops were destroyed and 38,000 houses collapsed or were damaged, with total economic losses estimated at more than $610m.

Blue Dragon’s response to the recent heavy rainfall:

Recent storms have devastated some of the poorest, most remote communities in central and northern Vietnam. As the floodwaters recede and the extent of the devastation becomes clear, Blue Dragon continues to provide people with food, supplies and safe accommodation.

Blue Dragon is providing shelter for families whose homes have been submerged. They have teams searching affected areas delivering food and supplies while offering vulnerable families whatever they need to stay safe.

Further north, many mountainous villages remain inaccessible and uncontactable. In Ha Giang province, much of which is remote and inhabited by people from ethnic minority communities who experience some of the highest poverty levels in the country, hundreds of houses have been destroyed. Schools are closed, roads are blocked and communities across the region have no electricity.

When the floodwater recedes, Blue Dragon will help people to rebuild people’s lives. As well as new homes and household supplies, people will need food and drinking water, medical care, psychological counselling and support to start small businesses.
